Alkina Kin Shiraz 2023
- Region: Barossa Valley, South Australia
- Sub-Region: Greenock
- Varieties: Shiraz (92%), Mataro (8%)
Vineyard From Alkina, a 60-hectare single estate in Greenock owned by Alejandro Bulgheroni and certified organic and biodynamic. Consultants Alberto Antonini (winemaking) and Pedro Parra (soils) mapped the vineyards. Kin comes from younger plantings on schist, limestone and clay, including Block 23, planted in 2017. The fruit was picked between 23 and 26 March after a long, cool season. About 85% of the Shiraz was whole-bunch fermented with wild yeast in concrete tulips and matured six months. The Mataro was fermented and matured in concrete. It is 13.5% alcohol under screw cap.
Wine Lifted dark rose, violet and tea leaf with liquorice spice. The palate is concentrated, with blackberry, plum and damson held in check by a fine mineral backbone. A schist-derived core gives structure, and the tannins are polished and powdery. It is savoury and medium-bodied, with energy and freshness rather than weight.
