Sangiovese 100%
Italy, Montalcino
The Montalcino area is steeped in rural tradition where families farmed plots of varying sizes. The medieval town of Montalcino is located on a chain of hills lying between Siena to the north and Monte Amiata to the south. The area is famous for “Brunello di Montalcino”.
The small Brunelli farm lies in the midst of the Montalcino hills, owned by Mauro Brunelli and Anna Savini and their son Luca. It covers 25 hectares of land, 15 of which are vineyards and six are planted under Brunello di Montalcino vine register for D.O.C.G. (Controlled and Guaranteed Origin). Another four hectares fall in the Montecucco area, with more vines, olives and woodland.
Brunello di Montalcino is one of the most well-known and treasured wines. These Sangiovese Grosso vines sit on one of the highest altitudes in all of Montalcino. The view is breath taking but the yields are some of the lowest in the Brunello DOCG. To counter, their vines are kept only 20 inches high - with the lowest grapes a mere 6 inches off the ground - with only four clusters left on each plant. This gives less than one bottle of wine from each vine, incredibly low but concentrated yields.
Expect extraordinary elegance and concentration, enhanced from extended ageing: 42 months in Slavonian oak barrels and French oak barrique, and a further eight months in bottle. It's bright ruby red to garnet from ageing with aromas of cherry, plum and spices. Full bodied, lively acidity, red fruits, long finish with great longevity.
