Tempranillo

Spain, Navarra

The winery is the oldest in Fuenmayor, Rioja. Founder Felix Azpilicueta Martinez had big plans to expand the winery but was halted during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939). When the war was finished, the emblem of the winery was born: Siglo Sack Crianza.

Paolo Orsini, a close friend, came up with the idea of a jute sack, inspired by workers of the land who would wrap the wine in wet tissue to stay fresh during the day. The sack added an aesthetical value, paid tribute to the traditions of the past and also protected the wine from light and changes in temperature. The launch of Siglo Sack Crianza signified an important milestone in the history of Rioja.

The wine comes from 50-year-old-vines growing in poor clay and calcareous soils in the Rioja Alta and Rioja del Reyno areas, mostly sun facing, at altitudes of around 2400ft.

Aged in barrel for 12 months - 50% French 50% American - and rested in bottle for six months before release, expect intense cherry red colour with a hint of garnet, aromas of black and red fruits, spices, eucalyptus and elegant toast. To taste, its fresh, round and elegant with ripe tannins and lasting red and black fruit notes.
